Description

Histamine is a neurotransmitter and an important chemical mediator involved in immune response, inflammation, and allergic reactions. It is synthesized by the body through the decarboxylation of the amino acid histidine. Once produced, it is found in various immune cells, including mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils, where it is released upon activation.Once formed, histamine is either stored or rapidly inactivated by its primary degradative enzymes, histamine-N-methyltransferase or diamine oxidase. In the central nervous system, histamine released into the synapses is primarily broken down by histamine-N-methyltransferase, while in other tissues both enzymes may play a role. Several other enzymes, including MAO-B and ALDH2, further process the immediate metabolites of histamine for excretion or recycling. Histamine is involved in several physiological processes, including regulating gastric acid secretion and vascular permeability. It also plays a crucial role in the body’s immune response to allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, and certain foods. In response to allergens, the body releases histamine, which causes vasodilation, increased blood flow to the area, and increased mucus production. These reactions are responsible for the symptoms of an allergic reaction, including redness, swelling, itching, and congestion. Understanding the function of histamine and how to manage histamine intolerance is essential to maintaining optimal health and preventing allergic reactions.
